Earlier this fall, IDEO and Purpose hosted a speculative conversation to explore potential challenges and opportunities around the Future of Work. On December 2nd, we continue that conversation by reflecting upon the American Dream.

Shelby Clark is a social entrepreneur who has dedicated his career to building and empowering p2p marketplaces. He is currently the CEO of peers.org, which aims to create a new version of the safety net for independent workers. Previously, Shelby was the founder and CEO of RelayRides (recently renamed Turo), the world’s first peer-to-peer carsharing marketplace, which now operates in over 2,500 US cities. He was an early employee at p2p microfinance lending platform Kiva.org. Shelby is intrigued by the power of connecting people online to positively impact the offline world, and believes strongly that the rapidly growing and evolving Collaborative Economy has the potential to be an incredibly positive force in our society and economy. Shelby holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University, where he attending on a swimming scholarship.
Negin Farsad was named one of the 50 Funniest Women by the Huffington Post, named one of the 10 Best Feminist Comedians by Paper Magazine, and was selected as a TEDFellow for her work in social justice comedy. She has written for/appeared on Comedy Central, MTV, PBS, IFC, Nickelodeon and others. She is director/producer of the feature films Nerdcore Rising starring Weird Al Yankovic and The Muslims Are Coming! starring Jon Stewart, David Cross and Lewis Black (both available on Netflix). Her next film 3rd Street Blackout, starring Janeane Garofalo and Ed Weeks will be released in 2016 along with a book How to Make White People Laugh (published by Grand Central, a division of Hachette). Negin obtained a Bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a dual masters degree in African-American Studies and Public Policy from Columbia's School of International & Public Affairs.
Creative Tensions is a physically activated collective conversation in which participants share where they stand on a topic by virtue of where they stand in the room. Inspired and provoked by a pair of speakers who approach the topic from wildly different contexts, Creative Tensions prompts reflection, explores nuance, and celebrates the rare moment when one change one's mind.
